Difference between visa 176 and visa 475

This article is for those who are interested in applying for 176, 886, 475 or 487 visas. Normally people who cannot achieve the pass mark for 885 or 175 visas apply for the above mentioned visas.

Those applying for offshore immigration (applying from outside Australia) often ask the question

"What is the difference between visa 176 and 475?"

A similar question is asked by those who apply for onshore immigration (applying while inside Australia)

"What is the difference between 886 and 487?"

Searching for the answer, I stumbled upon this link by the Victorian government.

As obvious from the link, every state maintains two types of occupational lists. One list is for 176 visas and one is for 475 visas. 475 visas are mostly regional visas away from Metropolitan centres of the state.

So if your occupation is present on the 475 list of a state, then you can only apply for 475 visa. If your occupation is listed on the 176 list of a state then you can only apply for 176 visa.

Please note that 475 is a temporary 3 years work visa where as 176 is a permanent visa. Both of them require 100 points to qualify.

Here is a list of state/territories offshore 176 and 475 visas. The same applies for onshore 886 and 487 visas.

@ Vishal

Please explain more what you mean?

You can lodge application for 176 while physically being in Australia.

However the onshore equivalent of 176 is 886 visa.

Kind Regards

What is your question?

Unknown said...

My question about the best way to immigrate to Australia as a pharmacist, i mean the best visa type.
Second, I need your opinion about employer sponsored visa, is it available or its too hard to find sponsorship?
Also, can a migration agent help me to get a sponsored visa?
Finally, im thinking about going there via a tourist visa and looking for a job there, would it work or its money wasting?

These are my 3 questions and sorry about being unclear
Thank u in advance.

My question about the best way to immigrate to Australia as a pharmacist, i mean the best visa type.

If you already have a positive skills assessment from Australian Pharmacy Council then all you need to do is to have the right score in IELTS and lodge an application for general skilled migration.

You can apply for any of the visas.

Visa subclass 175 ---------> General skilled migration independent.

Visa subclass 176 --------> State sponsored skilled migration. Provided you have a state sponsorship. That happens when the profession is on the on-demand list of a state.

There are other permanent residency visas such as Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme visa subclass 119. You need an employer sponsorship to be awarded this visa.

Second, I need your opinion about employer sponsored visa, is it available or its too hard to find sponsorship?

There are some temporary employer sponsored visas such as a 457 visa.
You need employer sponsorship to be awarded a sucblass 457 visa.

Employer sponsorships do happen and it all depends upon the employer.

You will need to convince an employer to sponsor you. But that happens rarely for low level jobs as the procedure is costly and requires the employer to give guarantees.

Also, can a migration agent help me to get a sponsored visa?

Only a state sponsored visa.

Finally, im thinking about going there via a tourist visa and looking for a job there, would it work or its money wasting?

You can try but I would not recommend this.

Try to get a permanent resident visa which gives you unlimited work rights. That would solve a lot of problems.

Kind Regards

if you are dependent of 475 visa holder, then can you study at university in Perth and live outside Perth as Perth is not regional area of WA? Travelling everyday from Mandurah to Perth is easy and can be done.
