The result was announced on the 18th of July 2007 for the Autumn semester. Much to my relief, I had cleared all subjects and finally I am a Master in Inter-networking from the University of Technology Sydney.
The Inter-networking degree is a one and a half years long course which can be upgraded to an extended degree by studying additional four subjects. I chose the extended option and studied four additional subjects.
The M.Sc Inter-networking program is a specialist course which emphasizes on setting up Wide Area Networks(WANS) and Local Area Networks (LANS). The lab equipment is provided by Cisco Systems Inc. Most of the degree is hands on practical work using Cisco Routers and Switches. Some subjects have no lectures at all and are purely based on lab work which is why the exams are also mostly lab based practical exams. Though, some subjects do have written components as a part of the over all assessment.
The cost per subject as of today is $2700 AUD, which is slowly increasing every semester. Taking sixteen subjects would result in a bill of $43,200 AUD. This is a huge amount but worth it. Plus you need to add the cost of living which can be roughly $1000 AUD per month.
My stay at UTS has been a very positive experience and has given me skills which will help me a lot in the booming job market of Australia.
I will be posting more information related to Australian universities and what life is at an Australian University.

hi junaid,
I am indending to do a PG(MS) in IT or comp science from Australia, but i have few questions which are listed below:- can you please help me out answering them....
1) Is it better to work for 1 or 2 years before doing an MS in computer science or IT from Australia
2) What are the job oppurtunities if MS is done after Btech from India without any work experience.
Can you please help me to find an answer for my queries at the earliest since I have to complete lots of formalities to get admission into a good Australian Uni. for the upcoming academic year. I am considering couple of universities like Monash, NSW, Adelaide etc..
Q1. Is it better to work for 1 or 2 years before doing an MS in computer science or IT from Australia
Ans: Yes a lot lot lot better to get experience. In Australia the only thing that counts is experience and certifications. Degrees dont matter much.
Q2. 2) What are the job oppurtunities if MS is done after Btech from India without any work experience.
Very limited. In Australia, you will find it very difficult to get jobs with no work experience. On top of that because you will be over qualified, you will have problems landing an entry level job. And without an entry level job you cant get middle level jobs.
My experience tells me that it is better to get at least one year experience and then come to Australia.
hi junaid,
I have 2 questions
1- do you need to have a programing skills in order to success in this program
2-is this program difficult,I mean master in internetworking
regards,
@Sub Zero
****1- do you need to have a programing skills in order to success in this program
2-is this program difficult,I mean master in internetworking****
Ans 1:There are only two subjects which require programming skills, but they are basic level and you dont have to worry about it. You can talk to your coordinator and take another subject instead of the ones which involve programming.
Ans 2: Depending upon what your background is, it can be difficult or easy for you. It is a hands on practical degree with lots of lab work.

It depends a lot upon your previous background.
I didnt have any networking backgrounds and I have more aptitude towards hands on sorts of degrees.
So this degree pretty much suited me.
The curriculum is totally Cisco based. You get to do the same as you would in CCNA, CCNP, CISSP.
So if you have already done those, then there is no need to do this degree.
Plus its a lot more expensive then doing CCNA,CCNP but you get a masters degree at the end which never expires.
So its up to you to go for this degree which is expensive or go for certifications which are cheap but expire.

I asked Umar Waqqas; one of the master of internetworking graduates from UTS about the two programming courses and he said that they are bit difficult and they are core courses (you can’t change them), so is that true and from your opinion how are these courses for the one who has no background with programming

If you have never studied a programming language in your life then yes its a problem.
However, if you have studied a programming language and you are familiar with the basics of programming languages then it wont be a problem.

To get a job you need the following
1. Work rights
2. Relevant job experience
3. Certifications
Expensive degrees from reputed universities are only helpful once you have the above mentioned three things.

Hi Arif,
You pay per subject and as of now the cost of a single subject is around $2700 AUD.
If you are not an Australian citizen or a permanent residency, then you cannot study part time. You have to study full time.
Job opportunities depend upon your skills and abilities.

Well when I was taking the subject, lots of students failed in Unix system programming.
Then they reduced the level of difficulty of the subject in the next semester and made it easy.
So I guess if its the same situation now, it wont be difficult for you.
I am not sure of Internet programming but the main aim was on two assignments of programming which you have plenty of time to do.
And the best way around is to practice the tutorials which give you complete guides for passing the subject easily.

Hi junaid,
A very exhaustive site with loads of useful information.
I am planning to study as well as migrate to Australia.. I am a engineer by qualification and IT Professional by profession. I have in all 3.5 yrs exp.
I am planning to apply for an MBA. A 1yr or a 2yr course.
All i want to know is would an MBA from Aus help me get into the good markets of Aus once i finish my course ? I mean is the job market stable there ? I have seen pretty low dollar costs over the last 2 months.
Please advise.
Thanks,
Siddharth.L
@Siddharth
1. Migrating to and studying in Australia are two different things. You need to be sure what you need to do first.
2. Job market in Australia is good as far as I know. However every thing depends upon work experience, skills and expertise. You have to be exceptionally brilliant to prove that despite the fact that your studies are in engineering, you work experience is in IT and now you want to move into management, you are worth it.
So you might find it easy to get a job in IT but not in management as your work experience is in IT.
3. Read my posts related to migration for international students and offshore migration.
Let me know if you want to migrate as an international student which is the costly way OR apply for offshore migration.
Kind Regards
Junaid
Thanks Junaid for the prompt reply.
Well, to answer your questions I have a lot to explain n discuss. But i don't understand where to start from.
I want to study. Thats for sure. But its not urgent. Migrating is primary now. Also, am planning to marry next year and my fiance is also my age and similar experience in IT industry. One positive thing is she is from Computer Science Engineering and has been into IT for 3.5 yrs now.
So I thought of Offshore migration by making her the primary applicant, then get married next year and finally when she gets the PR, I apply as her spouse dependent.
I guess after attaining a PR, we can study as well in the country.
Please let me know if there are any potential flaws in my plan so far.
Thanks,
Siddharth.L
@Siddharth
Yes, the way you are planning is a better option as it is more financially viable.
Onshore migration as an international student can cost you around $10,000 per person in tuition fees for two years, from an ordinary down the street college.
From a reputable university like UNSW or UTS, it will cost you like $50,000 per person for two years in tuition fees alone.
So I would suggest waiting for your or your wife's work experience to become 4 years in IT and then apply for offshore immigration.
Yes, include her as the primary applicant and you can include yourself as the secondary applicant.

Hi Junaid,
I am getting an option on a Global MBA degree being offered by IBS-International in collaboration with University of South Australia(Adelaide), whereby i would get a dual degree. I have option of choosing MBA-Finance,MBA-Accounting or MBA-Suply Chain Management.There are some considerations and constraints under which i am working on this admission.
1) Job Prospects, when i complete my MBA in Australia.
2) As we dont get PR on the basis of MBA degree so what options are we left on this.
@Anonymous
1) Job Prospects, when i complete my MBA in Australia.
Jobs prospects depend upon your skills, work experience and then last of all qualification. With no skills and solid work experience your degrees are of no use.
2) As we dont get PR on the basis of MBA degree so what options are we left on this.
Well, then study some thing which will get you a PR, OR alternatively try to obtain the a positive skills assessment from AIM, Australian Institute of Management.

Hi Junaid...
Hope you are doing good.. I have previously written a couple of posts on Migration related topics..
Well, now i have a different purpose...
I am working in an IT firm, TCS, and as an onsite assignment will be traavelling to Melbourne in a weeks time from now. I have the 457 Visa stamped onto my passport now.
Will the 457 Visa be helpful in applying for the Aus PR ?
Please advise.
@Siddharth
Well it depends what sort of permanent visa you are applying for.
It will surely help you to get points for Australian work experience provided you work in Australia in an occupation listed on the SOL for at least one yr.

@ioetu
hi junaid,
I am scheduled to start my Msc internetworking at UTS. I have a question. What is the pay rate after graduated from UTS and getting a job?.
The pay rate has nothing to with your university degree.
Pay rate depends upon
1. Your work experience.
2. Your skills and abilities.
3. Your ability to demonstrate your knowledge by becoming productive from day one.
In Australia degrees have no value without work experience.
Kind Regards
Junaid
Hi Junaid ,
I am applied for Internetworking at UTS too.
I was looking at your UTS transcript and wondering why you opted for 3 subjects per semester as opposed to 4?
Was 4 too much of a work load?
Will student studying this course have time to work part time? Will the study workload allow for it?
You waited 8 months for PR , in that time were you in aus? if yes, were you allowed to work ?
Thank you
@Rajan
I was looking at your UTS transcript and wondering why you opted for 3 subjects per semester as opposed to 4?Because the less subjects I take the more I can concentrate on my job.
The more subjects I take the less I can concentrate on my job.
So the minimum subjects which I was required to take was 3 so I took 3.
Will student studying this course have time to work part time? Will the study workload allow for it?Well you can only work 20 hours per week. The course is quite tough and it depends on your abilities how to strike a balance.
You waited 8 months for PR , in that time were you in aus? if yes, were you allowed to work ?
Yes I was in Australia and yes you can work full time once you apply for PR.
Kind Regards
Junaid
On a scale of 1 to 10, how much would you rate this degree on toughness ? 1 being easy , 10 being super duper tough
You mentioned in your blog that experience is the main thing in Australia. Did you get any experience in Networking before you completed the degree? If not, did you find it hard getting a job?
Did you get to use the things you learned in the degree in your present job ?
Kind Regards
@UTS
Well I would rate it some where around 7 to 7.5.
But it depends upon the individuals taking the course.
I had great interest in the course and did not need to work much to clear the subjects.
Any one with no back ground in networks can find this course very difficult.
Kind Regards
Junaid
Hi Junaid,
Hope you are doing good !
I have written in this blog a couple of times before and received your replies.
They were related to PR.
Well, now, I am in Melbourne for the last 4.5 months and will be here for the next 2 years. I have come here on work (through a 457 Visa) which is valid till 2012.
I am looking to apply for Skilled Assessment with ACS this August.
Just wanted to know from you that is this time good enough, in terms of market and PR sanctioning rates, for applying ?
Also, will the 457 visa i currently hold be of any additional use for the PR. I know for a fact that Australian experience is a huge bonus, but please let me know your views on my current case.
Thanks,
Sid
@Siddarth

Sorry I didnt understand your question.
It is good time for what? Applying for a skills assessment from ACS or applying for a job?

Only relevant Australian work experience enables you to get bonus points.
Just holding a 457 visa doesnt mean any thing.

Hi Junaid,
I am applying for the MS in Internetworking(Extended) at UTS. Could you please help me with a few enquiries that i have...
1. I am a student of Electronics and Communications. How difficult will this course be for a student of EC?
2. What criteria could UTS ask for in deciding the students whom they offer a seat?
3. How difficult is the Visa application process? I am a student with no work experience, but I scored 8.5 on the IELTS.
4. How does the course in UTS compare, as that of similar courses in other universities in Australia, eg - Monash?
My email ID is avinaba.basu @gmail.com
Please help me out.
Thanks
Hi Junaid,
I have applied to UTS for the MS Internetworking Extended program. Results are pending. However I have a few doubts that I need your help to clear away.
1.What is the criteria required for the selection done by UTS?
2.Is there any scholarship that I can apply to, from within the University? I have applied to the Endeavour Awards as well.
3.How does the course stack up against similar courses from other universities like Monash?
4.What is UTS's present world and national ranking?
5.Are there any other good courses in Networking I can apply to?
My email is avinaba.basu@gmail.com
Please help me out.
Thanks
@Avinaba
1. I am a student of Electronics and Communications. How difficult will this course be for a student of EC?
Depends how much skills and understanding you have in computer networking and TCP/IP.
Did you study any networking courses in your bachelors?
2. What criteria could UTS ask for in deciding the students whom they offer a seat?
Not much in time. You need to have a good score in IELTS and have a bachelors degree.
3. How difficult is the Visa application process? I am a student with no work experience, but I scored 8.5 on the IELTS.
The visa process is straight forward. You need to show financial support and funds to cover your study and cover your stay.
Work experience is not required.
4. How does the course in UTS compare, as that of similar courses in other universities in Australia, eg - Monash?
This course is the same in all universities as it is delivered by Cisco systems.
Difficulty may vary depending upon your understanding of computer networks.
2.Is there any scholarship that I can apply to, from within the University? I have applied to the Endeavour Awards as well.
There is a scholarship for international students. Check it out on the UTS web page.
4.What is UTS's present world and national ranking?
Dont know. But world rankings are not an indicator of how good the internetworking course would be.
5.Are there any other good courses in Networking I can apply to?
MSc Internetworking.
Hi Junaid,
I am a network engineer and still working until now. Right now, I have the ccnp certification and pursuing other cisco "P" certification. I have working experience for almost 2 years now.
1. what do you think between cisco certification and UTS master internetwork program?
2. with my working experience and certification, will it benefit me to get a job in Australia if I have finished the master program? in the scale from 1-10 and 10 being the hardest, what is the possibility to get a job there as network engineer in this current condition?
thanks
@Eddy
I am a network engineer and still working until now. Right now, I have the ccnp certification and pursuing other cisco "P" certification. I have working experience for almost 2 years now.
1. what do you think between cisco certification and UTS master internetwork program?
It is exactly the same as a Cisco certification but labelled as a MSc Internet-working degree.
2. with my working experience and certification, will it benefit me to get a job in Australia if I have finished the master program?
You will to have a permanent resident visa OR you should be so good that an employer is willing to sponsor you for a 457 visa.
in the scale from 1-10 and 10 being the hardest, what is the possibility to get a job there as network engineer in this current condition?
All depends upon your skills. So check seek.com.au and see whether you have the skills required by the market.
Hi Junaid,
Can you please shed some light on the networking field scenario in Australia. Is it a growing field ? Are network professionals in demand in Australia? What are the long term prospects in this field? Is the networking job going to stay on the Skilled Occupation List for long?
Thanks in advance for your reply.
Regards
Rahul
@Rahul
Can you please shed some light on the networking field scenario in Australia.
Which networking field are you mentioning? IP networking? Cellular networking? Fibre transmission networking?
And when you say scenario what exactly is your question? Please be specific.
Is it a growing field ?
If your question is that are there are lots of jobs waiting to be taken up? You can get an idea of how much your skills are in demand by visiting seek.com.au and searching for positions that you are interested in.
Are network professionals in demand in Australia?
Again, seek.com.au would give an idea of whether your profession is in demand or not. If a profession is listed on SOL then yes probably it is in demand.
What are the long term prospects in this field?
No one can answer this question.
Is the networking job going to stay on the Skilled Occupation List for long?
No one can answer this question
Thanks in advance for your reply.
Your welcome
@Alok
Please read the following link which lists out the requirements for applying for 485 visa.
http://www.immi.gov.au/Visas/Pages/checklists/485.aspx
One of the requirement is as follows
Graduate Work stream
Provide these documents with your application if you are applying in the Graduate Work stream.
Evidence of a skills assessment a skills assessment in which the relevant assessing authority has assessed your skills as suitable for your nominated occupation, or evidence that you have applied to the relevant assessment authority for a skills assessment for your nominated occupation (which is on the Skilled Occupation List.
If your course is no longer accredited by ACS then you will not be able to get a positive skills assessment and hence not be eligible for 2 yr graduate skilled visa.
Moreover, university representative gave me an option to switch over to Master of IT and do majors with internetworking but since it will mainly cover the core networking subjects and I am more interested in Networks, I am reluctant to do that.
The major inter-networking subjects are more than enough to cover all the topics.
If I was you I will go with the advice of the uni and then study as many internetworking subjects as I can.
Kind Regards

If it is not accredited by ACS then you cannot apply for positive skills assessment which means you cannot apply for Permanent residency.
Other than I think the course is very good if you are interested in learning about computer networks.
hI ,
I want to know some information about IT course. Master of information technology Internetworking it a same as computer network ? its good subject to getting PR IN AUS .PLZ reply early as possible
@Shafin Haque,
I will not be able to tell whether the Master of technology internetworking is the same as computer network or not without looking at the course contents.
I don't understand your question about getting PR after completing your degree. Completing a course does not guarantee PR. You need to fulfill other requirements before you can go ahead and get a PR. Do your research.
