The hurdle of IELTS

One of the processes to gain permanent residency is to gain a certain score in the International English Language Testing System, IELTS exams.

As per the legislative changes introduced in the points system from the 1st of September, 2007, if you gain 7 or more then 7 in ALL modules of IELTS, then, you score 25 points.

When I first appeared in the IELTS test in Sept, 2004 in Pakistan, I scored more then 7 in all modules of IELTS in the academic version of the test.

While applying for residency in 2007, I was very much confident that I would score more then 7 in all modules of IELTS on the first go, however, to my surprise, I was unable to score 7 in all modules and was constantly getting 6.5 in the reading module.

Finally on the third attempt, I achieved above 7 band in all modules of IELTS and got through the exam. I actually got 8.5 in listening, 9 in reading, 9 in speaking and 8 in writing.

Word of Advice

Do not take the IELTS exam lightly, even if you are really confident of your English language skills. It can become a difficult hurde. For those who have a weakness in a particular area of the English language should prepare well before the exam.

IELTS can become a real pain in the neck without any reason.

Prepare well and do not take it lightly.

Practice Material:

I have been receiving a lot of queries from people asking for help in the IELTS examination.

I am putting up some material which you can download by clicking on the following links.

http://rapidshare.com/users/V4KHSM

Simply download all files and then unzip them all in the same directory.

Please note that all files are required to unzip the archive. You have to use the winrar application to be able to open the archive.

Best of luck.

Is the general IELTS easier in any way than the academic?
I have a overall 7 band reading 6.5 which is the lowest.
I heard general is a bit different than the other one?

Hi Junaid
I have heard that academic is tough than general
is it so?
If yes whats the diff and a 7 band with least 6.5 in 1 sub is good enough and can fetch 7.5 with ease if you are sound in language bcoz reading sometimes due to time constraint fetches you less marks for eg
I had over all 7
R-6.5 i missed 5 last ans which were quite easy n i knew the answers appropriately
L- 8
W-7
S-7

@Nishant

I will not say if the one is easier then the other.

I achieved above 7 in all modules on my first attempt in the academic version.

Three yrs later, it took me three attempts to do the same in the general version.

So dont take it lightly.

But for immigration purposes you can take either general or academic.

Listening and reading are objective in nature and can be easily tackled by practising for a short time.

However, speaking and writing are subjective in nature and one has to prepare for a longer period of time to be able to score 7 in the writing and speaking modules.

Send me an email and I can send you some materials which you can use for practice.

hi junaid...
can you clarify me the following issues?

1. If one appears for ielts exam consecutively, say a gap of 1 month in between for better scores, then which one is valid? what about the others?

2. say one applies for TR with 6 band each and after lodging the application he appears for ielts exam. say he may either score better than the earlier or poorer then that. in such case which one is valid?
your clarification would be highly appreciated.

The IELTS exam that you submit to the immigration department is the one that will be considered.

You cannot submit IELTS twice. You can only do it once and that is when you are lodging the application.

hi

i was not clarified with this one..

1. If one appears for ielts exam consecutively, say a gap of 1 month in between for better scores, then which one is valid? what about the others?
the results may be better then the earlier one or poorer.

Imagine this may be the case before lodging an TR application.

@Raj

You can only submit one IELTS result with your application and the Ielts score in THAT test is the one that is considered.

You cannot submit other IELTS results which you give later on.

So there is no use appearing again in the IELTS test once you have already submitted the application.

hi junaid,

Can you please explain the possible raw score we have to get out of 40,in order to achieve a band of 7 across all modules in GT?

cheers

Junaid Noor said...

@Raj

I really dont know much about the scoring of IELTS.

All I know is that you read the material, practice and you can score 9 in each module like I did.

hi junaid,

Can we lodge a new application for PR during the process of TR, where one scores 7 in each band after TR being lodged but the decision of TR is on the way.

cheers

Junaid Noor said...

@Raj

Yes you can lodge a new application for another visa during the time when your application for TR is being assessed, however, that would cost extra money.

Hi junaid,

As we know that we require IELTS handy for lodgement of PR/TR application, is it the case with Health examination and police clearance or can we obtain or submit it later i.e. after lodging application.

Thanks

Raj

Junaid Noor said...

@Raj

Police clearance and health certificates can be sent to the department when the visa officer demands them.

Hi Junaid,

I am quite confused as to follows:

1. Once you finish ur study and apply for either TR/PR and simultaneously Medibank/OSHC gets over as well.So when we r in Bridging visa, do we have to buy insurance.
I doubt they provide insurance as u r no longer a student.
Is there any alternative..?

Your response would be appreciated

cheers

Junaid Noor said...

@Raj

Once you are on a bridging visa, you are covered by the gov medicare scheme. No need to buy insurance.

dear junaid,

best regards.

@Shazia

Sorry for the late reply.

If you want to migrate permanently to Australia, you will need to pass the AMC part 1 and part 2 exams.

Since you are already a specialist, may be you can get an exemption from AMC not to appear in those exams. However that is some thing you need to negotiate with AMC yourself.

From a immigration perspective, all you need to do is to get AMC give you a letter which says that you are qualified to practice as a GP/Specialist in Australia and then also get a letter from a particular state territory board of your registration.

So you need to check with AMC if they are happy to give you a license to practice as a specialist.

Alternatively you can sit in the AMC part 1 and part 2 exams and get a license. These exams are for GPs.

But mean while if you want to come and practice as a specialist on a temporary work visa, you need to directly find an employer yourself.

Each employer may require you to have a certain level of requirements.

For example some may say that yuo need to have 7 in all bands of IELTS academic version. Some may not want it at all.

So you need to directly deal with individual employers for a work visa sponsorship.

Please send me your resume and I will check with a contact of mine if he can get you a job.

Hope this answers your questions.

Kind Regards

@Tan

I would like to know if I am allowed to take IELTS in my own country?

Yes, you can take IELTS any where in the world.

Between, if I would like to use the IELTS results to apply for a job down here next there and perhaps apply for citizenship, which type of IELTS would be more appropriate for me to take?

Normally, employers do not require IELTS for job. They just judge your English language ability through interviews.

For citizenship purposes you can take the general version of IELTS.

Hi Junaid, thanks for the reply.Besides, how can I know if I am eligible to apply for PR now? I have been studying in Perth for 2.5 years(2008-Foundation, 2009/2010/2011-Degree, I am just an undergraduate student and not employed and I do not have family in Australia.
Thank you.

Which immigration are you planning to pursue? Offshore immigration or onshore immigration? The rules are different for onshore and offshore immigration.

For offshore immigration, you need to have a minimum of one year work experience in the profession you nominate on the SOL, positive skills assessment from the relevant assessing body, minimum IELTS score of 6 in all modules of IELTS, and a score of 120 points for visa subclass 175 or a score of 100 for visa subclass 100.

For onshore immigration, you need to have a minimum of 2 years study in Australia in a profession closely related to what you will nominate on the SOL, a minimum of 6 score in all bands of IELTS and a score of 120 for visa subclass 885 or a score of 100 for visa subclass 886.

I have been studying in Perth for 2.5 years(2008-Foundation, 2009/2010/2011-Degree, I am just an undergraduate student and not employed and I do not have family in Australia.

You will have to study in a course which is closely related to the profession you nominate on the SOL.

Check the SOL and see what profession you want to nominate.

Read my post named Points for PR which gives you a complete picture of how you can apply for permanent
residency.
