Plssss Haaalp; Which Uni to chose

I often get frantic and desperate SOS messages from different people around the world asking me the same question.

Which university in Australia should I chose for my studies?

I have answered this question numerous times and this time I am going to put here on the blog so that the rest of the world can also see it and hopefully avoid asking it.

Here is a question which one Mr. Zeeshan in his email sent me from India.

I have an admit at the foll. univ
1. University of Sydney for Master of Engg in Wireless Engineering
2. University of New South Wales for Master of Engg in Telecommunication Engg
3. University of Tech Sydney for Master of Engg in Telecommunication Engg

Now this is the typical sub-continental style of choosing a university for post graduate studies. Just get an admission into any university as long as it has a good reputation. All the three universities named above have a very good reputation and all of them have a name in the industry. But should one chose a course in the university simply because of the reputation of the university? What if the course one enrols in, is not that good? What if the same course is being delivered much better in a different university with a lower ranking?

Here is my advice.

DO NOT CHOSE UNIVERSITIES BECAUSE OF THEIR REPUTATION AND NAME. Chose a course which you like and then enrol yourself in the university which is providing the course of your choice.

The next question would be; how do I choose a course?

Well, you have to do little bit of home work for that question to be answered.

The first thing is to visit the website of universities and check the course descriptions given on the website. All the subjects available in a particular course/program are listed on the websites of well reputed universities. The contents which will be taught in each subject are also listed on the website of the course. The number of assignments, quizzes, exams and lab work is also mentioned on the website. The availability of the subjects throughout the year is also mentioned on the program website.

So the first thing is to select a course/program. Then compare the course contents of the program with the course contents of a similar course being offered in another university.

At the end of the day you should be having a list of 5 courses in different universities. Compare the course contents, subject descriptions, topics covered etc. of all the courses you are interested in and then finally chose the course you would like to enrol in.

Once you have done, you can send your application to the university.

The bottom line is that dont chose a university based on the name. Chose a university based on the course contents it is offering in a particular area.

If there is any information lacking on the website of the course/program, send an email to the program leader or course coordinator who is always willing to help international students as they bring in lots of valuable cash.

Hope this answers the question.

Your welcome.

Thanks for the input.

I will be putting up a list of courses which are famous at different universities.

For example course A might be famous at Uni B but the same course might not be famous at Uni C.

I will try to gather a list of famous courses at different universities in Australia.

Hi,

Sorry, I have not done that as yet as I am very busy.

If you follow my instructions and compare the course contents of different universities, you will be able to figure out which course offers a better course in Accounting, finance etc.

Well that is true, most of the subjects you would be studying in your Masters degree would be the same you have already studied in your bachelors.

So it would be a waste of time and money.

But on the other hand you have the questions of permanent residency.

Why dont you do a degree in Information systems or some thing which is a little bit different.

Last of all, I would remind you that in Australia every thing is work experience.

Degrees dont count much without work experience.

So dont be disappointed when you are unable to get a six figure salary when you finish your masters degree.

So make up your mind what you want to do

1. You want to get PR.
2. You want to do Masters degree
3. You want to quickly get a six figure salary.

Hi,
I have selected 3 institutions for Diploma/Masters in Design at Australia and plan to apply PR after study.
1. International Design School(IDS): 2yrs diploma in design. (www.icpp.net)
2. Raffles College: Masters of Design 1.5 yrs
3. UTS: Masters in Design. 1.5 yrs

So what should I choose for my higher education and as well as PR. I am married and want to take my wife with me.

Please help me!

Thanks

@Asif

Well a lot depends upon how heavy your pocket is.

From PR points of view you need to study in Australia for at least 2 yrs in a course that is closely related to a profession on the SOL and is registered with CRICOS.

What is the profession you will nominate on the SOL?

If you already have work experience of at least 1 yr, you might be able to apply for PR directly.

Regarding your selection of Unis, please select on the basis of the quality of course and the amount you are willing to pay for it.

Hi junaid,

I learned a lot from ur suggestion..But there are still some confusing thoughts left in mind..I exactly want to

1. want to get PR.
2. want to do Masters degree
3. want to quickly get a six figure salary.

But there is a lot of confusion...bcoz I hav completed B.tech in Biotechnology and then i worked in as technical support engineer at Dell computers for 1 yr..Now my affinity towards hardware ,networking is more than Biotechnology..So i planned to do a MBA.Is there a reputed university which provides a good scope for MBA and takes students with one yr experience? If yes, then wat ar itz requirements?I have 60% above throughout my career without any backlogs.

Junaid Noor said...

@Joe

1. want to get PR.

You can work in your country for 4 yrs and then apply for PR

OR

You can come to Australia and study for two yrs in IT and then apply for PR.

Choose what ever suits you.

want to do Masters degree

You can do that in Australia however, to later on apply for PR, you would need to have studied in a degree closely related to the nominated profession. Unfortunately MBA is not directly related to IT.

want to quickly get a six figure salary.

For that you have to

1. Work hard
2. Be smart
3. Be lucky

So i planned to do a MBA

So go for it but MBA doesnt fetch you PR.

.Is there a reputed university which provides a good scope for MBA and takes students with one yr experience?

AGSM and Melb Business School

If yes, then wat ar itz requirements?I have 60% above throughout my career without any backlogs.

You have to check with the unis.

I have not researched on MBAs.

Hi Junaid,

I have completed my bachelors in computer science and want to pursue my career in Digital Design,,, i want to do Masters in digital design.. I wanted to know whether Sydney or Brisbane is a better place to pursue in this field??
shortlisted 1) university of queensland 2) griffith university 3)monash university 4)UTS..... which one better as i need to get a job in Australia right after finishing my masters so that i can repay my loan......

Thanks

Junaid Noor said...

@Shalini

As I have mentioned in my article, you need to check the course contents of the course you want to do and compare the same course with other course providers.

Since I have not studied design, I am not the best person to suggest which course to choose for digital design.

However, what I would advise you is to choose your university based on the quality of the course contents and not on the basis of the university's name and popularity.

A popular university might have a good faculty of engineering but may not have a good faculty of journalism.

So you have to do your home work to come to a good decision.

Regarding your aspirations to get a job in Australia; You should know

1. To get a full time job in Australia you need to have the appropriate work rights.

2. You also need to have the right skill set and work experience.

A degree from a university is not a guarantee of a job.

Hello Junaid,

I am intrested in studying International Relations/Studies in Australia. At first i choose UQ but didnt have enough money for the accomodation. Now i am about to choose Uni Sydney as i have got my uncle there who is willing to provide me with accomodation. But the tuition fee quotes are Very High there(30,000$)per year.

Would you please suggest me how i will be capable of supporting myself with the tuition fees?

Junaid Noor said...

@Blue

The best way is not to take chances and have a big bank balance to pay your tuition fees.

As an international student you will not be able to earn the tuition fees by working part time.

Uni of Sydney is one of the most expensive uni in Australia.

Your best chance is your own bank balance.

Well frankly i know, but remain persistent.
Uni sydney have "bachelor of social, political and economic science"degree and "bachelor of international and global studies"degree. These degrees have combined all my ambitions together.i'v not seen any other Uni anywhere that provides this array of courses.
I can imagine myself with a bachelor of Social ,political and economic science degree, what doors it will open for me...!
This thing is frustrating me...I pray to God to make me rich just for the duration of this degree...

Hello Fusan,

What aspect of university are you looking after? A university can be good for many reasons and bad for many reasons.

What is the criteria based on which you want to evaluate the university.

Hi Junaid,

I need your regarding PR as I am confused whether Masters in Finance or MBA would help me in getting PR? Or should I pursue to Master's of Professional Accounting course, I found this course very basic in curriculum as they take graduates who do not hold degree majoring in accounting. Please suggest as to when and how should I file EOI as I have 3 years of experience in accounting process. If I am fulfilling the minimum requirements of EOI then should I file it before getting into the two year Master's course in July 2014.

Please help.

Thanks,
Anuj.

@Anuj

I need your regarding PR as I am confused whether Masters in Finance or MBA would help me in getting PR?

Anuj, you can no longer study for 2 yrs and directly apply for PR after that. The rules have changed.

Once you finish your studies in Australia, you will then get a temporary work visa of 2 to 4 yrs depending upon what you have studied.

During this time, it is expected that you will gain employment in a profession listed on SOL and then based on that experience you will apply for PR.

Or should I pursue to Master's of Professional Accounting course, I found this course very basic in curriculum as they take graduates who do not hold degree majoring in accounting.

Please see my response above. Undertaking study A or study B does not make a difference.

What matters is whether you have skill set matching a profession listed on SOL or not.

Please check the SOL and find out which particular profession suits your work experience and get experience in that profession and then apply for PR by lodging a EOI. If you EOI is accepted then lodge PR application.

Please suggest as to when and how should I file EOI as I have 3 years of experience in accounting process.

If you have the required work experience in a profession listed on SOL ,in your case accounting, then the follow the process below

1. Score the required marks in IELTS
2. Get a positive skills assessment from the relevant assessing body.

3. Check whether you score the passing marks on the points test or not.

4. If you score the passing marks then lodge EOI and if accepted lodge application for PR.

If I am fulfilling the minimum requirements of EOI then should I file it before getting into the two year Master's course in July 2014.

Yes it would be my suggestion that you first lodge your PR application before coming to Australia.

Please note EOI is different then lodging a PR application.

There is no guarantee that your EOI will be accepted and you will be invited to lodge an application for PR.

Also note, that if you lodge an application for PR, there is no guarantee that it will be processed within the time period of your study completion.

Kind Regards

@Anonymous

As explained in my article, to determine which university is good for computer science, you will need to compare the subjects offered by the three unis and then decide which uni offers the best subjects.

It is too subjective a question to simply answer in black and white.

You need to do your research and figure out which subjects you want to take and which uni is the best for these subjects.

For PR please read my post.

Hi, Junaid,
I have completed my BSc in the UK and like to do masters of teaching in early years which is listed in SOL. I have already got a place in Monash university for next February. I want to do masters in Australia mainly to get PR. As I will be travelling with my husband and three kids expenses will be sky high. Therefore before I make the decision I'd like to know whether we would be able to apply for PR straight after the completion of my masters and as I got the British Citizen Ship do I still need to do IELTS and score 7.
Please give me some advice.
Thank you
Kind regards

No, You cannot apply for PR straight after studying for two years. You will need to lodge an EOI after completing your two yr degree and if your EOI accepted then you may apply for PR.

EOI and applying for PR are two separate processes.

What you can do in the interim is that you can apply for visa subclass 485 which is a 18 month graduate skilled visa and also lodge EOI and hope that you are invited to apply for PR.

Whether you will need to give IELTS depend on the type of occupation you select for applying for PR. See the below two links

https://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/skilled-workers/pesp-exemptions.htm#ele
http://www.visalawyers.com.au/content_common/newsitem.aspx?id=00af9033-efc9-4051-9556-1dab6495dc1e

Who is an exempt applicant?

An IELTS test is not required in cases where the nominated occupation does not require a level of English language competency for grant of registration, license or membership and the primary applicant:

Holds a passport of Canada, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland, the United Kingdom; or the United States of America; or
