Living expense working part time in Sydney?

Here is another question frequently asked by prospective international students wishing to come to Australia for future studies.
  1. Are part time jobs available in Australia/Sydney/Melbourne for international students?
  2. Are these part time jobs enough for making a decent living and covering all living expenses?
  3. Would I be able to pay off my tuition fees by working part time?
  4. Can I get a job to work in my own field/profession?
First of all visit this URL to get an idea of cost of living in Australia as an international student.

https://www.studyinaustralia.gov.au/global/live-in-australia/living-costs

So let us deal with all these questions one by one.

1. Are part time jobs available in Australia/Sydney/Melbourne for international students?

Yes, there are plenty of part time jobs available for international students in Australia, especially the major cities like Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide etc. I haven't lived in a small town but I am sure there must be lots of part time jobs in small towns too.

The first place to find a job are two websites, seek.com.au and mycareer.com.au

However, the above two websites mostly advertise professional jobs and do not have blue collar jobs listed on them.

The big super market companies, fast food chains, gas stations like the following:

1. Coles
2. Woolsworth
3. KFC
4. MacDonald
5. Opporto
6. Pizza Hut
7. Domino's
8. Nandos
9. Hungry Jacks
10. BP
11. Shell
12. Caltex
13. Bunnings Ware House
14. Harvey Norman
15. Domain
16. Bing Lee
17. Myer
18. David Jones
19. JBHifi
20. Greater Union
21. FedEx Kinkos
22. Bob Jayne T-Marts
23. Borders Book stores
24. Dymock Book stores

etc are some of the few places where you can get a part time blue collar jobs. Apart from the above mentioned established businesses, there are a plethora of Indian/Turkish/Thai/Chinese/Japanese restaurants where you can get work.

Please note that according to law you are only allowed to work 20 hours per week.

You should be able to easily make around $1000 per month which would cover your expenses. Getting a job at first is not easy because most new arrivals from the Asian countries don't know how to make a resume, prepare for the interviews and give the right answers to all the tricky questions of the interviews. I will make another post on that issue later on. So that answers question number 1.

2. Are these part time jobs enough for making a decent living and covering all living expenses?

As already mentioned, yes, working part time will cover your monthly expenses very easily and you will be able to balance your studies.

3. Would I be able to pay off my tuition fees by working part time?

The simple, honest and straight forward answer is a BIG NO!. You cannot make your tuition fees from simply working 20 hours per week. However, you might be able to do that during the vacations in which you are allowed full time work.

There are two academic semesters every year in Australia. From Feb to June and from August to Nov.

You get one month worth of vacations between June and August and almost 3 months worth of vacations between Nov and Feb.

You can work full time during these vacations. By working full time you can earn around $4000 in one month but the tuition fees per semester for four subjects these days is around $10,000.

So you will not be able to make the tuition fees for your semester which starts in August as there is only one month to available for full time work.

However, you have a good chance of making your tuition fees by working full time three months for the semester which starts in Feb.

All this depends whether your employer is willing to give you full time work or not. Towards the end of your semester, you should start looking for full time work.

So this brings us to the end of question number three.

4. Can I get a job to work in my own field/profession?

If you have valid experience and skills to match the requirements of the Australian work force, then, you surely can get a part time job in your own field.

For example, those who are from IT backgrounds can easily bag a part time job (provided there is one), if they have a certification plus some relevant experience. Plus not to forget how you make your resume and how you present yourself in the interview.

But if you are coming straight out from the university with no relevant work experience or certifications, you will have a hard time convincing employers to employ you. You can also show your projects and assignments as work experience. Any thing practical can be shown as work experience. Good marks and grades only help you when you can actually translate your academic experience into valuable and profitable expertise for your employer.

But finding an employer who wants to employ you for 20 hours per week is a little bit difficult since most professional jobs require full time work which is not allowed to international students. But keep searching and you might get one.

Hope all questions have been answered.

Kind Regards

The link for the Australian university is not opening.

I am unable to comment on particular courses in universities as different universities have different standards.

Please read this blog article where I have described how to check whether the course you are going is good or not.

http://study-n-australia.blogspot.com/2007/10/plssss-haaalp-which-uni-to-chose.html

The answer to your second question whether you can make the tuition fees is both YES and NO.

As I have written in the blog, it i very difficult to make 10,000 AUD in 6 months.

So unless you have a good job it is difficult to pay tuition fees.

The answer to your third question is that the vacations from Nov to Feb are longer because in Australia summers are from Nov to Feb.

And winters are from June to August.

So you get long holidays for summers and smaller for winters.

Hi ESR

The figure amount of fees you have to pay can be obtained from the fees as every university has its own fees structure.

Regarding your question whether you should do MIT or not is some thing which you should decide.

However my experience is that you should basically first get work experience and then later plan for further studies as in this part of the world every thing is work experience.

Hope this helps

I would again emphasise that whether your higher education would benefit you in the long term or not is a very subjective question.

You should decide yourself as to what your long term career objectives are.

I already informed you that its good to get some work experience related to your field before you come to Australia.

Regarding jobs, please read my post on Jobs which gives a detailed explanation of jobs in Australia.

If you read the post carefully and apply for jobs as mentioned, you are guaranteed to get a job within the first month.

Getting jobs in Australia depends upon

1. Relative work experience
2. Skills and competencies

If you have the above two then you can even get a job before your studies are completed.

Salaries are based on skills and expertise. Not degrees.

You can be a PhD and no one would pay a cent to you.

As I said degrees dont matter much over here.

What matters more is work experience and skills.

Ans 1: I have mentioned in my article that managing tuition fees is difficult but not impossible. You have to work hard to pay your tuition fees.

Ans 2: Regarding resumes and interviews, you should read various websites which help in making resumes and help you prepare for your interview.

There are many paid services too which help in making resumes.

Once you are here contact me and I will help you out.

1.how difficult is it to obtain a positive skills assessment to claim 60 points?

That depends upon the quality of your CDR.

If you write a CDR which satisfies the Engineering council of Australia, then you will get a positive skills assessment easily.

2.India has been given provisional membership in Washington accord.so do we still need to file a CDR?

well check that with the engineering council and see what they have to say.

3.Hows the demand for mechanical/automotive/manufacturing engineers in Autralia

The demand is very high specially in areas of mining and industrial engineering.

You must know that before you can migrate to Australia as a skilled professional you must choose a profession on the SOL/MODL.

Is there any profession on the SOL that you can apply for?

While there are plenty of jobs in Australia for accountants, job prospects depend a lot upon skills, expertise and above all work experience.

So it would be highly beneficial if you come to Australia with little bit of work experience.

@Ammar

What exactly is ACCA?

Australia has its own bodies for assessing accountants.

http://www.cpaaustralia.com.au/cps/rde/xchg/cpa/hs.xsl/index.html

http://www.charteredaccountants.com.au/

You will need to check with the above mentioned two bodies and see if your ACCA is accredited by them.

Also, you are working in sales, not accounting.

In Australia, sales and accounting are two different things.

Hi Junaid,

The information posted is indeed very helpful to understand different aspects of immigration related issues. I have following questions in my mind.

1)As posted by you finding job is easy but two things are need experience and Skills/competencies. Considering a situation that one is satisfying the skills/competency part , What is the minimum desirable work experience required to land a job comfortably even willing to go for a job to start from scratch.

2)What about the job environment while working with Australians? Any leg pulling issues? Any racism issues which may hinder one’s career growth? If yes to last two questions, then how to deal with such situations?

3)What is the scope of mechanical engineers based on your observation? Sorry in advance if the question is irrelevant to you since you have been working in IT sector.

Junaid Noor said...

Well normally if the job spec says 5 yrs work experience so then you need 5 yrs of work experience.

If the job spec says 1 yr of work exp then you need 1 yr of work experience.

Dont apply for jobs which require 10 yr of work experience if you only have 5 yrs of work experience.

Chances are you will not get it.

The rules are not as rigid as you expect them to me. They are quite fluid but there are some rules to play by.

2)What about the job environment while working with Australians? Any leg pulling issues? Any racism issues which may hinder one’s career growth? If yes to last two questions, then how to deal with such situations?

If you are an ace in what you do then no body can say any thing to you.

Becuse every one knows that making you angry would mean their own loss.

However, life is not ideal. There are issues every where and you need to gracefully deal with them.

What is the scope of mechanical engineers based on your observation? Sorry in advance if the question is irrelevant to you since you have been working in IT sector

Searching www.seek.com.au for mechanical engineer jobs would be a good way to figure out if mechanical engineers are in demand.

hi Junaid,

Thanks for your reply for my first post, posted in March 2009.

I want some suggestion/tips with reference to part time jobs on PR in this recession. I have gained a lot of information from your blog .I have my PR now.(offshore).
I need some input on the follwoing issues.

-> What is the best way to get short term rental in a city for a month instantly after arrival. What is teh best source to get a cheap one in a specific location.

->As a new immigrant having short term rental accomodation, in one city. I think one has to apply for jobs advertised locally there. spplying in other cities and then travelling there for interviews, paying higher for short term stays of a day or two.. all these factors is really confusing for me at the moment... do you have any tips in this regard

->In the current state of recession after taking opinions from some of my friends there, they told me that even these days its difficult to find odd jobs.
To be on the safe side one has also to apply for odd jobs in parallel with professional jobs. How to make a resume for an odd job? do we need to show our degrees, experience as an engineer for an odd job lets say pizza delivery, guard etc.Even if it is recommended to conceal my previous designation as an engineer and I being a PR holder apply for an odd job. the employer may ask what is the basis on which you have your PR. This is where one can get exposed. And do you really think employers like engineering professionals to be recruited for odd jobs considering 100% possiblity that he may quit any time after having his professional job.

What is the best way to get short term rental in a city for a month instantly after arrival. What is teh best source to get a cheap one in a specific location

Live in a backpacker hotel which is like $50 per week if you share.

Other wise go to a mosque and request accommodation. There are plenty of share advertisements on the bulletin boards of the universities. Normally students have temporary accommodations available.

As a new immigrant having short term rental accomodation, in one city. I think one has to apply for jobs advertised locally there. spplying in other cities and then travelling there for interviews, paying higher for short term stays of a day or two.. all these factors is really confusing for me at the moment... do you have any tips in this regard

Get the local addresses of mosques every where in every city. When applying for a job give the local address of the mosque as your residential address. Dont tell employers that you are not in the city. If they say they want to have an interview, tell them you can come tomorrow and book a flight and go there.

The best is not to be a burden on any one and just stay at a back packer.

But dont tell employers in Brisbane that you are in Sydney. Tell them that you are in Brisbane and do the same for the ones in Sydney.

To be on the safe side one has also to apply for odd jobs in parallel with professional jobs.

That is very true. I have listed around 30 stores and retail outlets on my blog. They all need part time staff. Apply for their positions.

How to make a resume for an odd job?

If you are applying at a retail outlet then you need to make a resume which shows you have experience working at retail outlets. If you are applying for a sales position then you need to make a resume you have sales experience.

Making resumes and preparing for interviews is one thing you need to know other wise you will have a very bad time in Australia.

Search on the internet and make some resumes for different roles.

do we need to show our degrees, experience as an engineer for an odd job lets say pizza delivery, guard etc

If you do that you will not get the odd job. You will be considered over qualified for the job. In Australia an engineer is only supposed to apply for engineering positions not a pizza delivery position.

Dont even tell them that you are an engineer. Just make up things for the type of job you are applying for and dont forget to memorize them else they will catch you lying.

Even if it is recommended to conceal my previous designation as an engineer and I being a PR holder apply for an odd job. the employer may ask what is the basis on which you have your PR.

No they dont ask that. They only want to know if you have work rights or not.

And do you really think employers like engineering professionals to be recruited for odd jobs considering 100% possiblity that he may quit any time after having his professional job.

That is why you dont tell them you an engineer. You tell them that you are an experienced pizza delivery boy/ experienced retail outlet specialist/ experienced sales expert. You dont tell them that you are an engineer.

@Talha

There is no one specific template which can get you through every job.

You have to read the job description and custom tailor your resume accordingly. You cannot use the resume you used to apply for a position at a software company to apply for a role at Petrol Pump.

They main thing is to keep your resume relevant to what the job description has requested.

You can include the following in your resume

Profile OR Objective

Work experience 1
Position Title
Responsibilities
Skills gained
Outstanding achievements

Work experience 2
Position Title
Responsibilities
Skills gained
Outstanding achievements

Work experience 3
Position Title
Responsibilities
Skills gained
Outstanding achievements

Work experience N
Position Title
Responsibilities
Skills gained
Outstanding achievements

Relevant Skills and expertise

Certifications/Qualifications

Memberships

The main aim is to make things relevant to the job requirements. Dont mention things which are not related to the job advertisement.

Skills required at a Petrol Pump are quite different to skills required at an IT company.

- Is their any discount in fees for you in Charles Stuart or not....I go 4k discount from Holmes college for Diploma...

-Whats the best time to Start education their ...July or Feb

-How's the quality of education in Charles Stuart Uni and Job Opportunities after degree for South Asians.

The universities close from Nov to Feb depending upon your universities schedule. Check the time table for exact dates.

How much you can make in 72 hours depends upon the hourly rate you get.

What you get after tax is again dependent upon your hourly pay.

their any discount in fees for you in Charles Stuart or not....I go 4k discount from Holmes college for Diploma...

Well you will have to check with the individual college/university for any discounts.

Can You Pay your fess in Installment ....

Again, you will have to check with the university.

you go for Shared accommodation in Sydney then what would be the total monthly expense...600 or 700 roughly or more.for everything Including food and rent..

Use the website www.domain.com.au to get an idea of how much the rents are in different suburbs.

For food and transport, you are looking at around $500 - $800 per month.

When you are doing 20 hours a week a week how much money you can make per month 2000 or less...Can you work illegally as well to accumulate some money or can you take money for more then 20 Hours Off the Book. What r the chances of getting caught.

Depends what your hourly rate is. Do you get paid $20 per hour or $100 per hour.

When you do Diploma i heard their r only 2 Classes per week and for Degree 4 Classes per week.I Believe that's why People take admission in Diploma Classes so that they can work more and make more money to Pay for their Degree fee which is 9k per semester.

I am not sure but as an international student you have to study at least 4 subjects per semester. So I am guessing you will have classes for all 4 subjects on the same day.

The trick is to schedule your classes in such a way that all your classes are on the same day so you dont have to come to uni again and again.

You can only work 20 hours, no matter how many classes you have.

Whats the best time to Start education their ...July or Feb

July.

ow's the quality of education in Charles Stuart Uni and Job Opportunities after degree for South Asians.

I have not studied from that university so not aware of the quality. For jobs research on www.seek.com.au to check what is in demand in the market and what skills are in demand.

What Occupations would be in Demand after 4 yrs...I know no body is sure on that but What you think ... accounting or IT Relate...for secure future.

I am unable to say.

- I need PR after Degree but Rules are changing so frequently that now you are Unsure whether you will get PR or not.because Occupation that are in SOL list may not be their in future. So What r Other Options apart from getting married their.

Best thing is to go for offshore immigration. You don't get to waste money for a degree that is not going to help much and also get work experience which is more valued in Australia then degrees.

If you don't want to do that then you have to be ready for the fact that rules change every now and then and in June 2012 a new rule will be implemented which will require you to lodge EOI and leave Australia and later on lodge application.

No, not many are able to pay their tuition fees. I don't know how they pay their tuition fees. If you want to study from a good university, it will cost a lot and you cannot make your tuition fees from odd jobs.

-Is Security Pays the most ...

I have not worked as a security guard but I dont think they pay more then 20 per hour.

Getting married just for getting residency is CRIME and I cannot advise you on that.

Also, you are adopting an escapist strategy and it will backfire in the long run.

-You mentioned in 2008 Post that its difficult to Pay tuition fee but not impossible ...do you stand on the comment..in this yr.

It has become even more difficult now.

@Adeel,

You can check the demand of your profession in different parts of Australia by researching the following three job websites

www.seek.com.au
www.careerone.com.au
www.mycareer.com.au

Adelaide university is renowned for research and your wife can easily get a job as a microbiologist as a researcher.

Also ask her to search for jobs at

www.csiro.au

For resumes I would suggest you read the following document and make a STAR resume

@Gaurav,

If your tuition fees is paid then the rest is quite easy to manage. Yes you will be easily able to pay off your living expenses by working 20 hours per week.

As mentioned in my article, the problem is the tuition fees. Not living expenses.

Hope this helps.

If you are coming as a dependent on your spouse's student visa AND your spouse is enrolled in an undergraduate degree, than, you can only work 20 hours per week. You can only work full time if your spouse is enrolled in a postgraduate course.

You can read the following to confirm what I have said.

http://www.immi.gov.au/students/students/573-4/obligations-family.htm

Since BBA is an undergraduate course, you will not be able to work full time.

2.how much can I earn in odd jobs per hr? or per day?

Depends on the hourly rate you earn and the tuition fees of your wife. In most cases it is very difficult to manage tuition fees.

3. how much will it cost me to live with my wife in a single br studio?

Depends on your life style and where you want to live. You can check the rental prices on domain.com.au

4. can my wife also find a suitable job for herself..as she don't have any job experience previously

Yes, she can also work 20 hours per week ONLY.

Only during the vacation breaks, you can work full time.

I did not understand your question? You want to save for your degree? Well if you want to save for your degree, you have to have a source of income which allows you to live as well as save. So if you are planning to save, what is your source of income?

3-Which is good university amongst these for IT degree.CSU - VICTORIA - ACU ? or else Which Uni you would suggest me which charges 8k to 9k per semester ?

I am not aware of a uni which charges that much per semester. It all depends upon the course you are enrolled in.

Depends what job you are talking about? Both are big cities and there are lots of odd jobs available.

You are very correct that from 1st July, 2012 , the new rules will be implemented.

http://www.migrationexpert.com.au/visa/australian_immigration_news/2011/Sep/0/509/Australian_Student_Visa_Program_to_Change_in_Response_to_the_Knight_Review

You can still apply for a 2 yr work visa and try to get a job, which I know is difficult, but still not impossible.

Pathway to PR now includes getting work experience while on the 2 yr work visa.

The other option is to apply for offshore immigration before 1st July, 2012 to avoid your application being assessed per the new rules.

2-Is IT Jobs available in Sydney or Melbourne ?

Both cities. Check seek.com.au

3-I will bring 1.5 year Tuition fee with me but I need to earn rest of the fees for 1.5 years through Jobs in Aus.Is it possible to manage it ?

Would you be studying for 3 yrs? Thats a long time. Earning tuition fees is really not easy and you should have a backup plan.

3-I am experienced in Marketing and can communicate very well and have American accent. What are my chances of getting ODD jobs their ?

Having good communication skills and experience in a particular field really gives you a big edge while job hunting. A good command over English would be a real plus.

Instead of going for odd jobs, I would suggest you go to marketing positions as you already have experience in it.

But first get an odd job to get your cash flow going.

4-Is it worth coming to Aus for IT degree in networking ?I am from Pakistan.

Depends what you are trying to get out of it and where you study it from? Like most students if your intent is to get PR than whats the point of checking the worth?

However, I would suggest that you get a degree from a reputable university because if you do not get PR at least you will have a degree from a reputable university.

There are some weakness in my self which I observed that will effect me in some manners after analyzing things
1- My confidence level is not good
2- I am not good in English language

4- I dont think so I score good in IELTS exam but I am preparing my self to score atleast 6.

But with all these my positive points are I am having 2 years of experience in E-banking application I did many project locally and internationally also, not as developer as a consultant and implementation engineer, I am also have skills in SQL, Oracle, linux, windows which I earn from my professional experience

Confuse Pakistani Students need your help !!!! Is it good to study in Australia or not ?
Junaid,
Here is the post I read please tell me whats the way moving forward ?

Article / Post.
Studying in Australia is expensive, very expensive. The learning experience isn't as great. Reputation-wise, it's definitely less reputable than a UK/US university.

Finding a job?

-Don't think you can get a job here straight away when you get here. Many jobs require PR, without PR, you wouldnt even stand a chance for an interview.
-Without PR, you will most probably end up at petrol station, 7-eleven, working as kitchen-hand or waiters/waitresses at a Chinese restaurant, you will be underpaid, probably for only $5-8 an hour. Worst still, you will often be threatened by your employer because you dont have residency. Some unlucky ones may end up doing illegal things or working at brothels.
-Don't be lured by the upcoming introduction of Post Study Work Visa, coz most employers won't consider applicants without PR. It's just an advertising campaign to lure students. Unless you wanna keep working for those underpaid jobs, which don't even cover your living expenses, don't expect you will get a job.
-International students pay more tuition fee, don't get concession for travel, basically Australians see international students as cash-cows that subsidise their underfunded domestic education. They don't want immigrants, hopefully, international students can just put down their money and go, that's what Australians are after.
-You will find out soon that everything is too expensive in Australia that you can't even live a basic life, let alone a so-called "high- quality lifestyle".
-Do the maths before you make a decision of studying here.
-School fee: in average say : AU $25,000 per year, Rent: $600/monthx 12=$7200, Food, transport, miscellaneous: $15,000, total: approx: $50,000
-Income: $5/hrx20 a week= $100 week x52= $5200 per year.
-You will be living a pretty shxt life and working your axrse off for 3 years
-and heading home with a huge amount of debt+ no hope of securing PR.
-IS THAT WHAT YOU WANT?

Australian universities provide education. They are not in the business of getting you PR.

What is your aim of enrolling in an Australian university? Education or PR?

If it is PR then every word of what you have copy pasted is true.

Yes most jobs require full time work rights but you can still find part time jobs with your limited work rights status.

But even if then you wont get paid more than $20 per hour and after tax you will get around $17 per hour.

Yes your expenses for the year are around $50,000 for studying in a good university.

So do your maths.

I have always mentioned in my responses that you can easily earn your daily living but your tuition fees is some thing which is very difficult to earn.

I am applying for Project management in Australia. Business System Analyst occupation is mentioned on SOL. What are my chances of getting some better job in while studying in Australia and what are my chances to get Work permit/PR after completing my Project management. Please do reply ASAP. Thanks.

Junaid Noor said...

@Raza

I am applying for Project management in Australia.

You are applying to study Project management? Or are you applying for immigration by nominating Project management as your profession?

Business System Analyst occupation is mentioned on SOL.

That is true. Are you planning for offshore immigration or Onshore immigration? I would suggest that you first apply for immigration and then come to study while your application is processed.

What are my chances of getting some better job in while studying in Australia

That depends on your skill set and work experience. As an international student you would only be able to work 20 hours per week during your semester.

So research seek.com.au and see how many part time jobs are available in your area.

and what are my chances to get Work permit/PR after completing my Project management. Please do reply ASAP. Thanks.

Grant of PR depends upon lot of factors. Please see my posts on PR and the latest point system.

In any case, by the time you finish your degree and are ready for applying for PR, the Australian gov would have implemented a new system which would prevent you from applying for PR directly.

Rather, you would first need to lodge an expression of interest and if the Australian gov selects you, they would invite you to apply for PR.

This system is being implemented on 1st July, 2012.

So it is better that you apply for PR before you come to Australia.

Hi Junaid,

Thanks for your prompt response. You asked few questions there answers are as follows: I am applying for Student Visa and selecting Project Management as my domain of study.
Are you planning for offshore immigration or Onshore immigration?

I am not applying for immigration because I guess I am not eligible for that, By the way how long it will take for immigration process to complete. Which is fats process, Onshore or Offshore? I didn't understand your reply like "I need to apply for expression of interest" and if it's accepted than I'll be allowed to apply for PR. Why r u suggesting me to apply for PR before landing to Australia as student? Is it possible if I apply for PR and along with that I'll apply for student Visa too? Is it possible I'll get student visa and my PR application remains in process. How long it will take to process a PR application either on shore or Off shore?

You need to answer alot of questions :) Thanks Alot.

Junaid Noor said...

@Raza

My suggestion was that it is better to apply for offshore migration as it is less costly.

Studying in Australia for two yrs, spending thousands of dollars and then applying for immigration is a very expensive process.

Onshore is slightly faster. Offshore takes any where around 16 months.

I didn't understand your reply like "I need to apply for expression of interest" and if it's accepted than I'll be allowed to apply for PR.

Read the following.

http://study-n-australia.blogspot.com/2011/12/skilled-migration-register-to-be.html

As per the new system, you will not be allowed to lodge an application. Rather you will first lodge an expression of interest and then if the gov wants, it will invite you to lodge an application.

Hence if you are an international student, and have studied in Australia for two yrs, you will be asked to leave the country once you finish your studies OR given a 18 month work visa.

The days when students could stay after studying and apply for PR will be over after 1st July, 2012.

So keep that in mind while planning.

Why r u suggesting me to apply for PR before landing to Australia as student?

Because

1. It is cheaper. 40 to 50 thousand dollars cheaper. You don't want to save that money?

2. If you come as an international student and study for two yrs, your turn will come some where in 2014. by then the expression of interest register would have been implemented and you will not be able to stay in Australia after finishing your studies except for 18 months of work visa after your studies finish.

So if you think you will be able to get PR after studying for two yrs, then think again.

Is it possible if I apply for PR and along with that I'll apply for student Visa too?

Yes. You can. This is the best way. Make sure you have enough points before you lodge the application or else it will be rejected.

Is it possible I'll get student visa and my PR application remains in process.

Yes. many students do that.

How long it will take to process a PR application either on shore or Off shore?

Around two yrs maximum after date of lodgement.

Hi Junaid,

One more question. If I apply for Work Visa which u told earlier will be of 18 months do they also refuse to give or it's easy to get 2ndly If I get any office/White Collar Job in that 18 months tenure than can I be eligible for PR? Thanks.

Junaid Noor said...

@Raza

The 18 month visa is called the graduate skilled visa. The details are listed on the link below

http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general-skilled-migration/485/

The requirements for getting the graduate skilled visa are as follows

1. is under 50 years of age

2. in the last six months has completed an eligible qualification(s) as a result of at least two years study in Australia

3. has the skills, attributes and qualifications that meet the Australian standard for an occupation on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL).

So to answer your question, No. It is not guaranteed that you will get this visa after two year study.

The main requirements is that you should have studied for two yrs and there is a profession on the SOL which is closely related to the course you have studied for two years.

I am planning to go for Masters in Project Management or in Professional Computing whose outcome for job is Business Analyst, System Analyst and others. Business Analyst and System Analyst are 2 profession listed on SOL/MODL I am working as Business analyst in multinational firm in Pakistan for about 2.5 years. I guess my experience and my qualification will help me in getting Graduate Skilled Visa. what do u think as Consultant. 2ndly is this "Graduate Skilled Visa policy" will remain applicable till end of 2014 or will be changed because I doubt if it's changed or omitted than what will be my option to stay over there to get PR. Any suggestion. Thanks.

Junaid Noor said...

@Raza

Business Analyst and System Analyst are 2 profession listed on SOL/MODL I am working as Business analyst in multinational firm in Pakistan for about 2.5 years.

Agree that business analyst is on SOL, but you will be applying for skill assessment on the basis of your two yr study in Australia. Not on the basis of your work experience overseas.

So what is your degree in? Project Management.

You will have to check with ACS and see if you can get a skill assessment as a business analyst on the basis of your project management study of two yrs?

I guess my experience and my qualification will help me in getting Graduate Skilled Visa.

Try reading the rules. You will get the visa if you fulfill the requirements. You will not get it if you don't fulfill the rules.

2ndly is this "Graduate Skilled Visa policy" will remain applicable till end of 2014 or will be changed because I doubt if it's changed or omitted than what will be my option to stay over there to get PR.

There is no guarantee that the rules will stay the same.

They can change.

If the rules change, then you will have to go for offshore immigration. I.e. leave the country and fulfill the requirements of overseas migration.

But by then the EOI register would have been implemented.

So make your move carefully.

hey you people's posts are helping me very much
i need to ask you a question that how much we can earn for an hour in a part time?
and also what you said in your previous posts that in a vacation period we can earn nearly 4000 dollars per month and we almost have 4 months as a vacation so 4*4=16
so we can nearly take 70% of our tuition fees by working full time in vacation period .
and , will Australian universities
gives scholarships?
so over all what you suggest?

Junaid Noor said...

@Sami

How much earn in a job depends on what the job is. If you are working as a cleaner, then, you might earn around $10 per hour.

If you are working as an accountant then you might earn around $20 an hour.

Yes you can work full time during vacations, BUT, the big questions is whether you can also get a job OR not. And whether the job is high paying or not.

For scholarships, check the website of the individual university.

You can study in Australia for two yrs and then apply for a permanent resident visa.

OR

You can apply from overseas based on your work experience and get permanent residency.

My blog has information on both the pathways.

Had various doubts with part time jobs, whether i could match my living expenses but reading ur blogs have proven very helpful.
The main thing i need to ask is will job seekers recruit people without PR for jobs after graduation for full time work ??
Though my primary goal is education and not PR but still want an idea about it.
Say i have got a job after graduation but not in a position to apply PR(due to rules down the lane) Do companies have an option of extending the work visa if we dont get a PR???

In very rare chances. Mostly they do not recruite people with no PR.

Say i have got a job after graduation but not in a position to apply PR(due to rules down the lane) Do companies have an option of extending the work visa if we dont get a PR???

Again, the chances of this happening is very rare and limited.

They will only sponsor you if you have some skill which they cannot find on the market.

Since you only have 2.5 yrs experience, I don't think you have any special skill which they cannot find locally.

@Rukhsana,

The question whether you can get a job in your own field is very important. Without work experience it becomes very difficult to gain a job in your own field specially if you are only allowed to work only 20 hours per week .

So it would be good to get work experience before you come to Australia.

and at present can i get a good part time job to sustain my living.

There are plenty of part time jobs which can help you pay for your living expenses.

The article below has links to many employers offering part time jobs.

You will have to contact universities. Very few universities offer scholarships for international students.

But no harm in trying. Or you can apply for a research program. Most research degrees offer scholarships.

No. It is quite impossible to make that kind of money on top of your living expenses. The normal day to day casual jobs are only good enough to pay for your living expenses.

2. Will there be any problem if I come to Australia paying my first semester fee and drop the second one for managing money then take the third one. I mean there are three trimesters in the university I am planning for the 2nd one and taking break during the trimester 3 which one is the summer.

You cannot drop out semester as that would mean your visa would be cancelled and you would be required to return back to your country.

You can only work full time during the semester breaks. You must attend all semesters consecutively without dropping out.

I have been searching through the net for the last six or seven months and found that the ISBT is one of the Cheapest and also UNE is not a bad university. The annual cost is 8000 AUD Per semester and 32000AUD (almost) in 2 years.

Now my plan is that I want to Join ISBT during the second semester [July - October] so that I have to pay only for one semester and then take a break in summer and make some money for the next semesters. This will reduce the load on my family. I have found in your blog that a student can make his tuition fee by working in his holidays. I believe I can do that too. The only things that bothers me is that ISBT has a semester during the summer. If they force me to join that semester I will be really in great trouble. Now I am asking you is that will my plan work or I should give up. Any suggestion you will give be very helpful.

Thank you again. You helped me a lot. If it isn't for you Blogs I might have given up all my hope of studying Australia.

Junaid Noor said...

@Aloran

You are not required to take summer semesters.

Summer semesters are for those students who want to complete their studies quickly.

If you want to finish it in its normal duration than you dont need to enroll in the summer semester.

How much you can make during summer vacations depends upon what sort of job you do and how many hours you get to work.

Normally it is very difficult to make 10,000 in 3 months.

But yes I know ppl who have done it.

@Ritika

Are there high chances of getting good part time jobs for girls to cover living expenses?

That depends on how you define good but generally most international students cover their living expenses by working part time in the above mentioned companies that I have listed.

Can we expect to save some money?

Again that depends on how much you earn and what are your expenses. Most students can easily pay off their living expenses BUT making tuition fees is totally impossible.

How easy is it to get a job in australia after the masters?

Getting a full time job depends upon your skills and expertise.

You simply cannot get a job because you have a Masters degree. You need to have work experience as well.

Also, having full time work rights also matter a lot. Most companies expect you to have full time work rights before they give you a full time job.

Hi Junaid Sir,
Thanks a lot for your this blog and help.
I am from India and I am coming to Australia for my Undergradution by January '13. I have received offer letters from Monash University and The University of Sydney both.
But I am confused about choosing between Melbourne and Sydney. I have my Family in Melbourne (My Sister and Brother-In-Law and Niece ) they are Australian Citizens. And they are suggesting me to join Monash as they feel it will be easy for me to be in Melbourne near them.
Do you think they can be of any serious help except that of moral support and a self satisfaction that...Yes !! I have somebody in Australia.
But personally,I have no issues being alone or staying away from family. I am not a family guy.
I am just worried about living my way of life, I mean if I go to The University of Sydney, will I get a part time job as a student on my own, I mean I don't know anyone there, how can someone employ a stranger without an approach of somebody known ???
And, if I work part time ?? Can I pay my rent and bear a good lifestyle.( I mean living a good life, going to a night club once in a while.)
Or Will I have to just live hand to mouth and be miser than usual and live like a very poor guy who doesn't earn much through his job.( my part-time job salary ???)
And what about Accommodation ?? Can I manage paying my rent living very near to The University of Sydney Campus through my part time job earnings ???
And lastly Sir, is Sydney seriously very expensive than Melbourne ??? (herd it from my sister )
Tution fees is not a problem, my parents will be paying that.
I am only concerned with my living expenses from my part-time job.

Will be anticipating your reply,

Yes a lot of real serious help.

But personally,I have no issues being alone or staying away from family. I am not a family guy.

Unless you have lots of cash, stay with family.

I am just worried about living my way of life, I mean if I go to The University of Sydney, will I get a part time job as a student on my own,

Whether you know someone or dont know someone, you still have to get a job.

If your relatives can help you find a job then nothing like it.

I mean I don't know anyone there, how can someone employ a stranger without an approach of somebody known ???

The best way to find jobs is to have a good skill which is required in the market and then to have a good resume.

And, if I work part time ?? Can I pay my rent and bear a good lifestyle.( I mean living a good life, going to a night club once in a while.)

Depends what you are working as part time and how much cash you have. You cant have a good life style if you work as a kitchen hand and wash dishes.

Or Will I have to just live hand to mouth and be miser than usual and live like a very poor guy who doesn't earn much through his job.( my part-time job salary ???)

Again, depends what you are doing part time? Washing dishes or working as an investment banker.

And what about Accommodation ?? Can I manage paying my rent living very near to The University of Sydney Campus through my part time job earnings ???

Again, depends upon your spending power and how much cash you have and how much cash you can earn working part time.

And lastly Sir, is Sydney seriously very expensive than Melbourne ??? (herd it from my sister )

Yes. Sydney is a lot expensive.

I am serving in Army as a Major and would like to study in Aus and then try for migration. After researching I found that Accountant is the most demanding profession in Aus and demand will remain high for the future as well. So, I decided to study accounting and my plan is as following:
1.Study Master of Commerce at University of Ballarat (2 years study requirement will be fulfilled).
2. Undergoing a professional year in accounting and search for accounting job beside doing any odd job.
3. Scoring 7 or higher in IELTS (InshaAllah).
Do you think I will get PR if I follow the above mentioned process?
Will my service in military put any negative bearing on getting PR in Aus?(so far my study goes, one has to declare about his previous military training and service in VISA application).
Thank you very much for your effort. Allah Hafez

After 31st Dec, 2012, there is no guarantee that you will get a PR just by studying for 2 yrs in a occupation listed on SOL.

The only thing you will get is a 18 months work visa after which you will have to convince your employer to sponsor you for a permanent visa. Other wise you will have to leave the country and apply for an offshore visa which might take 2 to 3 yrs.

The best thing is not to take such a big risk. Get accounting or work experience in any other occupation on SOL and then apply for PR while in Pakistan.

The path you are taking will make you spend for 2 yrs studying some thing which you are just studying because you want PR. Not because you like it.

Then once you have studied, you will go into the professional year. And then what happens next?

The thing is that there is no guarantee you will get PR after all this trouble.

And lets say you do get PR, what will you do after that? Certainly you will not be able to start a career in accounting ( unless you really like it).

If your aim is just to get out of Pakistan then I would say that play it safe and apply for offshore immigration instead of making such a risky move.

Will my service in military put any negative bearing on getting PR in Aus?(so far my study goes, one has to declare about his previous military training and service in VISA application).

Yes you have to declare that you served(ing) in Pakistan army. This does not have any bearing on your application.

Just state that once you get the PR, you plan to resign and move to Australia. There are people from many countries where military training is compulsory who live in Australia.

PS: You are making a very risky move. Assuming you have family and kids, I would suggest that unless you have a solid plan, do not put yourself in a position where you would have lost your job in Pak army, spent thousands, and have nothing in hand.

The visa scheme which allowed International students to apply directly for PR after completing education in an Australian university is no longer available.

So the best chance is to get PR by applying while in India.

You can read up more on different skilled migration visas by visiting the link below

There are two issues.

The visas that are open for general skilled migration, GSM, does not have points for non-Australian education. Check the following link

http://www.immi.gov.au/skills/skillselect/index/visas/subclass-189/#educational-qualifications

Secondly, you need to have work experience and in order to apply for a skilled migrant visa.

Just having masters is not enough.

What profession are you going to nominate on the SOL for applying for PR?

Can you get a positive skill assessment in that profession from the respective assessing body?

Have you obtained a EOI from the department?

junaid plzz tell me that can i do like this? so that i don,t need to wait in india,
and can a dependent work full time junaid?

If you are enrolled in a Masters or higher program then your dependent can work full time.

Last of all, even if you apply for PR some how, there is no guarantee that the application will be processed on two yrs before your finish your education.

In fact just getting a EOI and lodging the application will take around 7 to 8 months.

Hope this helps.

Check the website of the victorian police. It has all the crime stats for every area on it.

like how about security? is is safe place ?

Thats a very subjective question. Some areas are safe some are not.

how is cost of living and public transport there ?

Depends on your life style. Check the website 131500.info for cost of travel.

@Pasindu

If you scroll down the page, you can see that there is information available on becoming a commercial pilot.

Getting serious - Commercial and Air Transport Pilot Licences

After receiving your PPL you may decide to train for various aircraft endorsements and/or ratings.

If you wish to continue onto a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL), you will need at least 200 hours of flying experience with specified time as pilot in command, cross country and instrument flight time. If you enrolled in an integrated CPL course of aviation training with this flying school, this time would be reduced to 150 hours. The difference in hours reflects the different approach to training. With the 150 hours course, the theory and flying training are coordinated, whereas for the 200 hour option, they are often arranged separately.

Before you can attempt the CPL flight test you must pass a theory examination, covering similar subject areas as for the PPL but this time to Commercial standard and do a Recommendation Flight with the Chief Flying Instructor. While you may undertake the flight test for the CPL at 17, the licence cannot be issued until your 18th birthday.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Assalamu Aalaikum Junaid. First off, I would like to thank you cordially from the bottom of my heart for such a nice and helpful blog. This blog have cleared up a lot of confusions I previously had. Still, I would like to know a couple of things.

I'm planning to embark on the "Masters in Professional Accounting (with CPA extension)" at Macquarie University (either at Macquarie City Campus or North Ryde campus). The total duration of the program is 2.5 years and the total cost is 65000 AUD (13000 AUD/semester*5 semesters). My dad has agreed to sponsor up to 40000 AUD. I still need to manage the remaining 25000 AUD.

So, I was wondering if it would be possible for me to make 20000 - 25000 AUD in 2.5 years doing part-time jobs?

I have completed my Bachelor in Accounting degree in Malaysia (the medium of instruction was English) and I completed a 6-month internship at Al Rajhi Bank. I am fluent in English. I am planning to apply for admission at MQ university in the coming July 2014 intake.

So, what do you think? Will it be possible for me to make 20000 - 25000 AUD (excluding the living expenses of course) in 2.5 years doing part-time jobs?

And how available will the jobs (full time and part time both) be for me considering my experience and discipline (Accounting)?

I'm looking forward to hearing from you soon. Thanks again for such a nice blog. Jazak-ALLAH. Ma'assalam. ALLAH hafiz.

Unknown said...

Sorry Junaid, there should be a little correction in my 1st question. Not only the part-time jobs, but also the full time jobs will be done by me.

So, the right question is, Will it be possible for me to make 20000 - 25000 AUD (excluding the living expenses of course) in 2.5 years doing part-time jobs during the ongoing semesters and full time jobs during the vacations?

And the 2nd question remains the same, how available will the jobs (full time and part time both) be for me considering my experience and discipline (Accounting)?

That is a very tricky question to answer. It depends upon what sort of job you get to do?

If you will get $20 per hour or lower than that type of jobs ( pizza delivery, MacDonalds, dish washing, etc) then it is very hard to make that sort of money.

And who will pay for your living expenses? Is your father going to provide you with living expenses as well? If not then, your part time jobs will only help you make your living expenses. But certainly not your tuition fees.

If your father also pays for living expenses, then yes, may be you can work part time and pay off your tuition fees as well.

I have completed my Bachelor in Accounting degree in Malaysia (the medium of instruction was English) and I completed a 6-month internship at Al Rajhi Bank. I am fluent in English. I am planning to apply for admission at MQ university in the coming July 2014 intake.

If you have already done a Bachelor degree then the best thing to do is to get some solid and considerable career defining work experience instead of doing yet another degree with no work experience.

Degrees without work experience do not count much in Australia.

Your Malaysian bachelor degree will not help you much in getting an accounting job in Australia as Australian job market prefers work experience over qualification. Qualifications are only considered as an add on.

So, what do you think? Will it be possible for me to make 20000 - 25000 AUD (excluding the living expenses of course) in 2.5 years doing part-time jobs?

If your father pays for living expenses, then yes it is quite possible to earn that amount. Again depends upon your life style and how you manage your expenses. You will have to share accommodation, spend carefully and stay focused to be able to save that much.

And how available will the jobs (full time and part time both) be for me considering my experience and discipline (Accounting)?

As an international student, you cannot work full time except during semester breaks.

You can apply for part time accounting jobs employers might expect Australian accreditation from CPA or other governing bodies which regulate the accounting industry.

Search for jobs on seek.com.au and see if you come up to the expectations of employers in Australia.

Sorry Junaid, there should be a little correction in my 1st question. Not only the part-time jobs, but also the full time jobs will be done by me.

You can only work part time jobs during semesters and full time during semester breaks. Most employers would not be able to give you full time positions due to work right restrictions.

So, the right question is, Will it be possible for me to make 20000 - 25000 AUD (excluding the living expenses of course) in 2.5 years doing part-time jobs during the ongoing semesters and full time jobs during the vacations?

Yes, if your father pays for living expenses and you get a decent job where you have constant cash flows through out the year.

I had to work 3 to 4 jobs at a time during breaks but I was lucky I could get jobs. Others were not so lucky.

And the 2nd question remains the same, how available will the jobs (full time and part time both) be for me considering my experience and discipline (Accounting)?

Already answered, Start searching seek.com.au for part time accounting jobs and see if you match the skill set they are demanding. Try to understand what the employers demand. And see if there are any restrictions that will prevent you from applying for these positions like accreditation, certification etc.

Thank you so much for helping me out. Please take good care. ALLAH hafiz.

Your welcome. Happy to help further.

HI Junaid,

It was really really nice, reading everything up here. Thanks to you for such a great info bank you hold for guiding people like us.

I have done my Grads in Commerce in India, and then completed my PG in Finance in India Itself. I am working with one of the Big 4 Accounting firms of the world as a Tax Consultant since 1.5 Years now.
Total Work Experience is 1 Yr 8 months. So there is no break in my studies/ Experience.

My Plan is to shift to Australia forever and for that I am looking for different available options.

1. One of them is to apply for offshore PR, for that I am trying to show my remaining 1 yr 2 months Part time experience while pursuing my PG (as right now one has to have minimum 3 years International work experience) and then wait indefinitely to get a positive response(Doubtful)

2. Next option is to get into a PG course again, but his time at Australian University (Uni of Western Sydney for a Masters in Commerce/ Finance, but again this is a costly affair.
I am really not sure which way to go as of now, the only thing I am sure of is to work and live in Australia.

Please provide your valuable inputs.

Thanks for your time.

The only way these days is to apply for offshore skilled migrant program or get sponsored by an employer.

There is no other way for skilled migration.

I would suggest waiting and preparing for offshore skilled migration.

Coming to Australia and studying is not going to help you directly in applying for residency. Though it will help you in gaining points for Australian education.

The chances of you getting a permanent full time job in Australia after you finish your Masters degree is directly related to your chances of

1) Either an employer sponsoring you which is very difficult to do as you don't have Australian work experience

2) You getting a permanent resident visa which allows you to work and live permanent in Australia.

My advice would be to first get a PR visa and then come to Australia. Other wise there is no guarantee you will get a job.

and is it possible for me to recover my all study cost during 4 years of stay (2 yrs part time during study and 2 yrs.full time work permit)??

That depends what sort of job you are able to get. A pizza delivery job or a program manager job.

Mostly it is very difficult to recover the cost because without a permanent visa you only get low paid part time jobs.

?is it advisable from your side to quit the job from here and join master program in Aus.

Absolutely NOT. This would be a big foolish mistake. The best would be to apply for offshore immigration, get PR and then come and study so you can get a permanent full time job along the way as well.

?i wanna come there in jul-2014..kindly reply me as i have very short of time..

I also worked as an administrative head in the college in united kingdom. I came back to India because my psw was going to finish,
I wanted ti settle down in foreign land so I applied in australian universities for masters in professional accounting to keep in mind that just after the studies I will get psw snd then PR. But after reading your blogs, the picture is completely different.
You believe me or not, I was going to deposit the university fee bt after reading ur blog I have changed my mind. My university fee is around $ 500000 for 2 years. I was borrowing this amount from my parehrs so I can return them later. Bt it's a very risky business because I read ur blog about the jobs market and employers dont give jobs without PR. So I vl end up in the same position where I was in UK like after 4 years in one country just end up with part time jobs and return to ur country.
is there any other option in which I can apply? I have 3 years marketing experience and around 3 years experience in youth community services?
Csn I apply in offshore immigration scheme?

Hi Junaid.
first of all, I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for such kind of information.

You are most welcome.

I am from India. I have done my bachelor's in elect. &
communications in India. After the bachelor's, I worked for two years as a marketing consultant in India then I went for MBA in UK. After the masters, I got post study work there snd work in local city council as a youth worker. As I know, this job is not related to my degree. If accounting is not what you want to do in your life then this is a very heavy price to pay for PR. Read below how to get it one for a much smaller price.

But after reading your blogs, the picture is completely different.
You believe me or not, I was going to deposit the university fee bt after reading ur blog I have changed my mind. My university fee is around $ 500000 for 2 years. I was borrowing this amount from my parehrs so I can return them later.

I also spent around $80K in 2.5 yrs on tuition and living to get PR. Was it worth it? Certainly NO. as there are much cheaper, easier and less riskier ways of getting PR. This is the most stupidest, riskiest and costliest way of getting PR. Unless you have loads of free cash.

Bt it's a very risky business because I read ur blog about the jobs market and employers dont give jobs without PR.

Correct. No PR. No full time permanent job. You either need PR or get sponsored by an employer. There are loads of accountants so getting sponsored as an accountant is pretty hard these days.

So I vl end up in the same position where I was in UK like after 4 years in one country just end up with part time jobs and return to ur country.

Yes. Wastage of time and money and no career either.

is there any other option in which I can apply? I have 3 years marketing experience and around 3 years experience in youth community services?

There is a profession on Skilled occupation list named as Social Worker.

Go and check whether you can get positive skills assessment as a social worker. If you can then you apply for PR as a social worker as you already have work experience in that area.

You can access the SOL by visiting the link below

http://www.immi.gov.au/Work/Pages/skilled-occupations-lists/skilled-occupations-lists.aspx

You can choose another profession as well if you think it matches your profile well. Have a look.

Best thing is to come on a PR visa other wise you will go through the same experience as UK.

Aoa Junaid,

I have read all what is mentioned above from start and most of my questions have been answered. Thank You. However my situation is different from most of my friends here. I am a 31 year old Aeronautical Engineer working in Pakistan in one of the prestigious military organisation for more more then 7 years now. I have approached few consultants and after calculating all my points they said i can easily go to Australia as a Permanent Resident. Problem is that for years i have been working away from technical stuff and mostly working in operational management set ups of my organisation and its realy weird to admit i have forgotten most of the basics of engineering i did years ago. So :-

1. What kind of job i can do other then my relevant field? I am also thinking of getting into some college or university after doing full time work, maybe some odd jobs, for a year or two to save enough for any degree program.

2. Can you advise on highly demanded short courses/diplomas i can take with duration of an year or two , which can make me get a long term job as a PR?

3. Do you offer consultancy in becoming PR? What are your charges? I am asking you for all this as u being already in Australia would be able to help me more in getting any odd jobs to keep cash flowing till i get a gud job and accommodation issues.

and plz donot tell me look into seek/jobisjob/mycareer etc bulshit as i have been looking at them for months now and they have no clues, or at least i do not have any clues what they are posting.

Sorry for any spell mistake and tnx again for your help.

Hi Junaid,
Your blog is indeed helpful to me...I ve donw master in It and working in Africa. Now i would like to do PhD.But since i dont have any research experience i m planning to do masters again in Australia, which will lead to get the admission to phd. And i'm planning to stay there with my family. Now my questions are,
1. Is it possible to manage the total expenditure of my family through my part time job in Aus??
2. Whats is the feasibility of getting PhD admission after masters in Aus???
3. Is Swinburne University is a good one among other universities???
Please do clarify me these doubts. Thanks in advance for your reply.

If you can get a positive skills assessment from your respective assessing body then you can apply for skilled immigration based on your work experience.

The department of immigration follows the instruction of the assessing body when it comes to work experience. If the assessing body is OK with work experience then the department does not ask too many questions.

What kind of job i can do other then my relevant field?

Lots of them. It depends how much cash you have and how desperate you are. Most new arrivals who cannot find jobs in their relevant fields support themselves by doing odd jobs.

I am also thinking of getting into some college or university after doing full time work, maybe some odd jobs, for a year or two to save enough for any degree program.

Again depends what is the cost of your degree and how much your odd job pays? If you earn $10 per hour then their is hardly a chance you can save for your degree and pay for living at the same time.

2. Can you advise on highly demanded short courses/diplomas i can take with duration of an year or two , which can make me get a long term job as a PR?

Sorry I did not understand your question? You have mixed three different concepts in one sentence. What exactly are you asking?

Studying for two yrs to be eligible to apply for PR is concept 1.

Working in a profession that is on SOL is concept 2.

So now what is your question?

3. Do you offer consultancy in becoming PR? What are your charges? I am asking you for all this as u being already in Australia would be able to help me more in getting any odd jobs to keep cash flowing till i get a gud job and accommodation issues.

No I do not offer consultancy as I am not a registered migration agent.

and plz donot tell me look into seek/jobisjob/mycareer etc bulshit as i have been looking at them for months now and they have no clues, or at least i do not have any clues what they are posting.

What are you searching for on seek?

1. Is it possible to manage the total expenditure of my family through my part time job in Aus??

No. Almost impossible unless your wife also works. I am not sure how much your PhD stipend would be. It is better that your family waits till you have a part time in which you can afford your family and then they can join you.

2. Whats is the feasibility of getting PhD admission after masters in Aus???

That depends on your research interests and the person offering you the PhD position. Personally I dont think you will be given any preference without any research work.

If your Masters degree is specifically a Masters degree leading to PhD then yes that is a different case. But you will need to find someone willing to sponsor you for a PhD.

3. Is Swinburne University is a good one among other universities???

I will not be able to comment. That is some thing which depends a lot upon your research area and your supervisor.

Hi Junaid,
I am a international prospective student & i intend to study in Australia. Can you kindly advice me on the following.
1. The reviews & rankings on Central Queensland University online is not certain and i intend to study a 2 year MBA. Based on my finance, this is the only school i can afford. Please is this an accredited school and is it worth my penny?

2. Central Queensland University offers about three locations to study which is Rockhampton, Melbourne & Sydney. Which one of these cities will be the best to study and as well do a part time job.

3. Sincerely, i intend staying back in Australia after school to secure a job and get my permanent resident permit. Is it possible? Because according to reviews i read online, most students who get their PR usually are students that their courses fall under Skilled Occupational List. After checking the OZ immigrations SOL link, i really do not fall under any. Although my major in CQU will be Project Management.

4. I still intend to go for Procurement, Logistics, Operations & Supply chain Management certificates. I love everything about Procurement & I already have 2 years experience in the field, is Procurement a high occupational demand job in Australia. If so, where precisely? Or should i say between Brisbane, Melbourne & Sydney. which one of the cities demand for a these professions (Procurement/Logistics/ Operations/ Supply chain Management).
I would appreciate your honest response to this mail.

Many thanks & regards,

Check this post to help you determine whether this is a good choice or not

http://study-n-australia.blogspot.com.au/2007/10/plssss-haaalp-which-uni-to-chose.html

I don't know much about the MBA program at this university so I cannot comment. But read the article and it will help you in making a decision.

2. Central Queensland University offers about three locations to study which is Rockhampton, Melbourne & Sydney. Which one of these cities will be the best to study and as well do a part time job.

Sydney or Melbourne.

You will need to follow the new process of applying for PR. Once you finish your studies, you will apply for 485 skilled graduate visa to stay in the country.

You can also lodge a parallel application for EOI and if accepted you can then apply for PR (assuming you score the passing marks)

So its quite difficult to say right now what will happen after 4 yrs.

Given your circumstances I cannot be sure if you would be eligible to apply for PR.

Because according to reviews i read online, most students who get their PR usually are students that their courses fall under Skilled Occupational List. After checking the OZ immigrations SOL link, i really do not fall under any. Although my major in CQU will be Project Management.

You must ensure that once you finish your studies you are able to gain a positive skills assessment in a profession on the SOL. Without this you cannot apply for PR.

Only studying for two yrs is not enough anymore. In the past, before 2010, students could apply directly for PR after studying for 2 yrs in a course directly related to a profession on SOL.

The rules have changed now. After your studies are complete, you apply for a 485 visa and mean while if you score the passing marks, you can apply for EOI and if invited apply for PR.

Just because you studied in Australia is no guarantee that you will get invited to apply for PR.

4. I still intend to go for Procurement, Logistics, Operations & Supply chain Management certificates. I love everything about Procurement & I already have 2 years experience in the field, is Procurement a high occupational demand job in Australia.

By high demand do you mean high demand in market or on the skilled occupation list?

If you want to check the market then do research on seek.com.au

For skilled occupation list please check the latest SOL.

If so, where precisely? Or should i say between Brisbane, Melbourne & Sydney. which one of the cities demand for a these professions (Procurement/Logistics/ Operations/ Supply chain Management).

Check seek.com.au

I would appreciate your honest response to this mail.

Hello, junaid vi.I have go through the whole post. But I have a question. That If I get scholarship then can I pay my tution fees doing part time job?

Junaid Noor said...

@Book Fair

Scholarship is for tuition fees. If you get a full scholarship for your tuition fees then yes you can pay off your living expenses easily.

If you get a partial scholarship then that can be a problem as it depends how much scholarship have you received.

Hi Junaid,

I am shazia and I am enrolled in Curtin - Perth for MS in Project Management (Feb session).I have already done Bachelor in Electrical Enginnering and MSc in Engineering Management. I am switching my subject due to my career requirements. My husband and my little 5 month baby will be accompanying me.

I know Perth is expensive, and I have already researched a lot on living expenses and job criterias. And according to our calculations we will manage to arrange my tution fees (i.e $14000/sem) as husband will be doing full time job and I will do part time job.

My husband has done BS-IT, and he has about 6 year(relevant + non relevant) experience. And I have 4 year job experience(non relevant to engineering).

I am satisfied from my research and calculation but I am highly concerned about my husband's job (not odd jobs). Therefore, it is requested to guide me about jobs, living expenses and life in Perth Australia.

I will be thank ful

I would suggest that as a start you do not worry whether your husband gets an ODD job or a job in his own field.

Get the cash flow going and then later he can switch to his own career related job when he finds one.

If you are the primary applicant for a higher education student visa then your spouse will have full time work rights.

With full time work rights, he can easily do multiple jobs and make ends meet while he finds a role that suits his career aspirations.

Child care costs are very high so you may not be able to do a job as the salary will go towards paying off the cost of child care.

The best would be to do a child care worker job in a child care center which allows you to bring your child as well to the center.

I think this website gives a good idea of cost of living

Hope this helps.

It is hard to tell the living expenses as that depends upon your life style. However you should be looking at around $1200 to $1500 per month as living expenses.

Second thing is that after completing my 3 years BBA what should I do next to stay in Australia and get Permanent residence

To permanently stay in Australia you need to get PR.

For getting PR you need to understand a couple of things.

1. You need to score the pass mark for the visa subclass you are applying for.

2. You need to have positive skills assessment in a profession listed on SOL.

3. You need to have the minimum IELTS score.

4. You need to fulfill the pre-requisites.

Read my blog which gives a more detailed answer.

hi junaid,...im planning to study hotel management in australia......can i make my tution and living cost by working 20hours per week....my total cost would be around $20000 tution+hostel yearly.....im carrying 1st year fees with me...so m talking abt 2nd year fee

Junaid Noor said...

@Nicks

Please see guide below for cost of living in Australia as a student.

http://www.studyinaustralia.gov.au/global/live-in-australia/living-costs

You may be able to make living costs by working 20 hours per week but tuition fees is out of question unless you get paid $100 per hour. Most students get $10 to $15 per hour. So do your maths. 20 hours x $10 = $200 PER WEEK which is enough to cover your food and other expenses. Not even your rental. So be careful before you make an investment.

Junaid Noor said...

@Saroj

Whether you can cover your living expenses etc depends upon

1. Where you will live and what sort of rent you will pay
2. What will you do to make a living and how much you get paid hourly.

You should be looking to earn around $20,000 per year to cover your living expenses.

Hi junaid, The informations that you've given are soo valuable. Really thanks. And may I please know how far the situation is changed so far since you posted this. I'll be joining university of Victoria for diploma of business enterprises. Could you please tell me, what kind of part time jobs that I may get? Or advice me what kind of jobs that I should go for? And please be kind enough to send me a CV format to roshadkme@gmail.com . Thank you.

Junaid Noor said...

@Unknown

I am not sure what you mean when you say how far things have changed? They are still pretty much the same i.e. as an international student you can only work 20 hours per week during semesters and full time during semester breaks.

You can get any part time job as long as you can work 20 hours per week. You should go for the job that pays you the highest, gives you flexibility to chose your work hours around your study hours and is secure as well.

Hope this helps.

@Jaanu

You will have full time work rights if your husband is enrolled in a post graduate degree.

So given your experience you should be able to find a job as a java developer. I would suggest researching seek.com.au and linkedin.com to research the job market and develop any skills that are in demand.
